Faskally Caravan Park, near Pitlochry

We have been going to Faskally every summer for the past few years and while we took our tent the first few times my aunt now has a caravan there that she lets the family use so now we no longer have to chase after flying pillow cases and argue over tent pegs, thank god. It has made a big difference, now we can go up and stay for a couple of nights if we have nothing else on, it’s a perfect little retreat in the quieter months, very peaceful and relaxing. In the summer it gets a lot livelier and busier, although because it’s really spaced out and not cramped at all like some campsites it still doesn’t feel busy.

It is situated two minutes along the road past Pitlochry, in Perthshire, not far from the famous Queen’s View. If you carry on along the road it takes you also to Loch Tummel and Loch Rannoch.

Set in the heart of “Big Tree Country” it’s an ideal base to go exploring. Blair Atholl is just up the road and the Pass of Killiecrankie is nearby too. There are a few whisky Distilleries around about including the Blair Athol Distillery and The Edradour Distillery. You can go on Highland Safaries, visit the Salmond Fish Larder, go cycling, kayaking or horse riding. There is also over 30 golf courses within an hour’s drive including an 18 hole course in Pitlochry itself.

The campsite itself is quiet and tranquil, beginning at the foot of Craigower Hill and slopping gently down towards Loch Garry. You can stay here in the rented caravans, bring your tourer or tent, or stay in one of their amazing log cabins or wooden lodges.

There is a good little shop with good opening hours, selling all the essentials as well as souvenirs and booze. In the other building around the corner there is a nice pool, an arcade and a restaurant. The food is quite good, nice to go with the family in the evening, and there is a few good restaurants in Pitlochry as well you can try.

My favourite part is a gorgeous walk down to the river, taking the path at the bottom right of the campsite you can walk through a field and down to the river edge and have a swim in the water, you can also have BBQ’s, I haven’t yet but plenty people do. It’s a pebble beach surrounded by huge trees, idyllic.

This is a fab campsite, not only my family, but also almost everyone I know has been there and most of them go there regularly. It’s a must try for anyone wanting somewhere to stay in Perthshire.

You can book online on their website. The campsite is open from March to October, and includes brand new shower facilities, a laundrette and washing area
